Northwestern Polytechnical University
Situated at the ancient municipality, Xi'an, the Northwestern
polytechnical University( NPU) is a university of science and
technology feturing the development of education in aeronatics,
astronautics and marine engineering, giving priority to
engineering and putting considerable emphasis on science,
humanities and management. It is one of the 15 key national capital
construction sites of universities.
NPU was conglomerated of the Northwestern Engineering Institute and
Xi'an Ae ronautical Institute in 1957, and joined with the Aeronautical
Department of Harbin Engineering Institute in 1970. Apart from the
Graduate School, NPU has 7 colleges of total 15 departments with 42
undergraduate specialities, 54 master's disciplines, 19
doctoral disciplines and 5 postdoctoral circulating stations, 3
state key specialities, 8 national laboratories. Its library holds a
total number of more than 1.4 million volumes. NPU occupies an area
of more than 75 hectares on which is erected a building area of 500
,000 square meters.It has nearly 10,000 students including more than
1,400 doctoral and master candidates.Among 1,600 of its faculty, there
are 1090 professors, associate professors and other senior staff,
including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two
academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and two
academicians of foreign Academy, and 87 doctoral supervisors and
over 150 national distingu ished scientists, experts, and technical
advisers to national key pr ojects.
In the span of nearly 40 years since the conglomeration, NPU has
brought up 45,000 undergraduates and postgraduates including t he first
doctors in six disciplines such as aeronautical manufacture e ngineering.
23 Ph.D candidates won the international well-known "Humb oldt Research
Foundations". The experiences of its ten years persistance
in cultivating moral through pedagogy have been highly evaluated
by members of central authorities.
NPU attaches importance to scientific research. It possesses 28
research institutes,18 research centers,and 35 research sections. Since
1978, NPU's scientific research achievements have won more than 1,000
projects. The achievements have won 44 three key stat e-grade awards and
927 ministrial awards.Since the Seventh Five-Year Plan,the total budget
of every yea r for research is listed in the front of the national
institution s of higher learning.
Moreover,NPU puts much effort in promoting international collegiate
activities, as is evidenced in 80 fo reign universities and
research institutions having signed agreements with NPU in a wide
scope of international academic exchange and cooperation in
science andtechnology.
